Celebrities have launched many a global hair trend, from that Jennifer Aniston “Rachel” cut in the 1990s (so ubiquitous that hairdressers became sick of being asked to recreate it) to Kaia Gerber’s Kurt Cobain-inspired bob, created by super hairstylist Guido Palau. “For so long I felt this pressure to have the long, pretty hair that everyone expects you to have,” Gerber told Vogue in September 2019. “Then I asked myself who I was doing that for—I could cut my hair if I wanted to cut my hair. And I did.”

Beyond the all-important red-carpet dress, A-listers know that a sure fire way to ensure all eyes are on you is a dramatic hair restyle. Some of the most impactful over the years have been Natalie Portman’s buzz cut (she famously shaved her head for her role in 2005’s V for Vendetta); Emma Watson’s pixie crop in 2010, literally shedding Hermione Granger’s trademark curls to assert herself as a grownup actress; and Michelle Williams, who says that her varying degrees of short hair over the years are a tribute to her former partner, the late Heath Ledger: “I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it.”
