Two ways to prevent feeling lazy after eating rice
Rice is a staple food item in India. Be it using rice flakes for breakfast or having a bowl of it with some lentils and curry, rice is an indispensable part of the Indian diet. However, have you ever realised that eating rice makes you feel sleepy and lethargic? Here is why it happens and how you can prevent it.
While it’s okay to take a nap sometimes after lunch, it can become challenging during the weekdays when there are class schedules and work deadlines to be met.
If you do not want to give up on your favourite rice, worry not, celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija recently shared a post on Instagram explaining why one feels lethargic after having rice and ways to prevent it.
Why does rice make us sleepy?
Rice is comfort food and an all-time favourite across cultures. It is high in carbohydrates and is part of a healthy and balanced meal. While there is a reason why rice makes us sleepy, it does not mean it’s unhealthy in any way.
All carbs have a similar effect on the body, they are converted into glucose, which requires insulin. Once there is a surge in the insulin, it prompts the brain for the essential fatty acids of tryptophan to enter. This process causes melatonin and serotonin to increase which are the calming hormones and cause drowsiness.
The nervous system response, which is completely normal, slows down the body so that it can focus on nothing else a bit but just digestion.
What you can do to prevent it?
Yes, there is a way to prevent this mid-day drowsiness. Here are two simple solutions.
Eat fewer carbs
Your midday meal should have 50 per cent vegetables, 25 per cent protein and 25 per cent carbs. You must include carbs in your meal as it provides you with energy, however, to prevent sluggishness you can have a smaller quantity.
Have smaller meal
Portion control is the key. People who consume more rice than rotis make their meal larger, thereby resulting in drowsiness. The more you eat, the more difficult it becomes to battle fatigue. Take a small quantity of rice on your plate to ensure that the sleep-inducing hormones are not released in the bloodstream to make you feel tired.
