Jennifer Lopez Starred in Hustlers for Free: ‘I Bank on Myself’
With a career spanning more than 20 years, Jennifer Lopez has made quite the pretty penny— but she still has her ‘Jenny from the Block’ mentality. In her most recent flick Hustlers, which has been called Lopezs’ “best screen work since her early heyday of Selena,” Lopez didn’t earn a dime from it — at least, not initially.
The megastar recently sat down with G.Q. to discuss some of her biggest career moments over the years, and speaking on her most recent role, Lopez admitted it was difficult to get into the money-hungry mindset of her character explaining she’s never been motivated by money.
“I’ve never been motivated by money, I’ve always been motivated by, ‘I want to be a great actress, a great singer, a great dancer; I want to make movies, I want to make music,’ the money came along with that.”
The mother of two continued, I do things because I love them. I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers. I did it for free and produced it. I bank on myself. It’s like, ‘Jenny from the Block,’ I do what I want, I do what I love.”
Thankfully, banking on herself worked out for Lopez as the film has since grossed more than $130 million at the box office since it’s theatrical release in September, and has garnered an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and moviegoers alike.
