Fact Check: Can black fungus be cured by turmeric, rock salt, alum and mustard oil?
So far, more than 10,000 cases of black fungus have been reported. Black fungus, also called Mucormycosis is a dangerous fungal infection with a mortality rate of 50 per cent. As the doctors and patients are battling this rare fungal infection, several claims have been circulating around that bet to treat black fungus through home remedies.
One such message that has been circulating around the internet claims that black fungus can be cured by alum, turmeric, rock salt and mustard oil. However, investigations found that the message was fake.
The viral video shows Dr Parameshwara Arora explaining how black fungus can be cured by consuming two drops of mustard oil mixed with potash alum, turmeric and rock salt powder regularly.
The claim does not have any scientific backing and should not be followed by anyone.
What causes black fungus?
The black fungus infection is caused by mucor mould, which is found in plants, manure, soil and old fruits and vegetables. As per doctors, the infection is happening to people who are recovering or have recovered from the COVID-19 infection.
This is happening because the infection leaves the body with a compromised immunity, which makes the body vulnerable to infections.
The black fungus infection is being observed in people who were given steroids for a long time, were hospitalised for long, were given oxygen therapy, on ventilator or due to poor hygiene.
So far, Amphotericin-B, which is an antifungal drug, is being used to treat the disease. The disease is being called a pandemic within a pandemic.
Not just this, cases of two other rare fungus infections, white fungus and yellow fungus infection have also been reported.
As per experts, overuse of steroids and compromised immunity is leading to such rare infections occurring post-COVID recovery.
