Chrissy Teigen has been more than open about surgical enhancements she’s had over the years, including her buccal fat removal and having her breast implants removed. She’s also shared details of her eyebrow transplant.
Back in April, Chrissy hopped on her Instagram Stories to show off the results of her eyebrow transplant surgery. “I never wear makeup if I can avoid it, so I was so excited for this eyebrow transplant surgery,” she wrote, adding, “They take hairs from the back of your head!!”
Chrissy shared that her eyebrows were still “a little dark from the pencil” used from her surgery, pointing out that it’s “so cool to have brows again.” She also issued this warning: “Teens: Do not pluck them all off like I did!!”
Since then, she’s been showing off the results of her eyebrow transplant on Instagram, even recently pointing out that her brows now get really long. Evidence:
OK, but what? How?
Chrissy’s go-to plastic surgeon, Jason Diamond, M.D. (who regularly gets shout-outs in her IG Stories), shared info about his work when Chrissy first had her transplant done.
“I know too many people, entire generations, who either overplucked brows as part of the trend or are simply experiencing eyebrow thinning with time,” he wrote alongside a pic of Chrissy. “#EyebrowTransplantation is a procedure where we mutually agree on shape, density, etc., and skill takes it from there.”
Dr. Diamond pointed out that the “eyebrows play a huge part of the facial aesthetic,” adding, “They frame the eyes and can either be an asset to the eyes, or they can be the annoying part of your morning you have to spend ten minutes filling in.” Truth!
On a basic level, an eyebrow transplant involves taking hair from another part of your head and putting it where your eyebrows should be.
To do a transplant, the patient and their doctor will first use an eyebrow pencil to figure out where the eyebrows should go, according to an article in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The doctor will then mark up the margins and locations with a surgical pen. After that, a special machine will be used to harvest hair from the back of the patient’s head. It’s then trimmed to a few centimeters long and injected into the eyebrow area.
Finally, the brows are trimmed to the right length.
Just like with any plastic surgery treatment, you’re looking at a range in price depending on where you live and who you see. However, online estimates put the procedure as costing anywhere between $3,000 and $8,000. Basically, lush brows don’t come cheap.
It’s not entirely clear what the recovery time is like, but Chrissy didn’t seem to have much—if any—recovery time.
In terms of safety, the biggest concerns are just the potential for bleeding and not loving the results, according to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Oh! And if you have curly hair, you could end up with curly eyebrows with an eyebrow transplant. Just something to keep in mind…
