More than one year into the pandemic one thing is clear that COVID-19 isn’t easy to treat. The rate of infection is much higher in this case and the symptoms can turn severe within a short period. The virus weakens the immune system to such an extent that the body takes a lot of time even after testing negative to recover and build the strength back. That’s why it is crucial to take extra care of oneself post coronavirus for a speedy recovery and to boost the immune system. We talked to Ayurvedic expert, Nidhi Pandya to learn how Ayurveda can help to strengthen the respiratory system and boost immunity. Here are some useful tips that she shared with us.

Nidhi suggests that it is crucial for people recovering from coronavirus to eat freshly cooked, warm, light and mildly spiced foods. Warm food is soft, which is easy to chew and digest. Your body does not have to make an extra effort to break down the food and the risk of indigestion and other stomach related issues is also low. Moreover, adding spices like cumin and mustard seeds in the food helps to reduce inflammation and boost immunity. If you are adding fruits to your diet, have them after 10 am and before 4 pm.

Exercise To build back strength and endurance post-infection, exercising is crucial. If you haven’t been exercising before COVID then it is time to include it in your daily routine. But remember to start slow. The Ayurvedic expert suggests that performing intense work immediately after testing negative may make you feel tired and weak. “Start by doing restorative yoga and a little bit of weight-bearing exercises. After 3-4 weeks you can perform cardio,” she asserted.

Breathing exercises
Time and again, emphasis has been laid on the importance of performing breathing exercises for people recovering from coronavirus. Breathing exercises help to strengthen the respiratory system post-COVID. Start with gentle pranayama like Anulom vilom, breath retention, Bhramari and om chanting. Avoid intense pranayama that puts too much pressure on the respiratory system like Kapalabhati.

For cough
In long COVID, some people experience coughing for quite a long time post-infection. The episodes of coughing intensify at night, which makes it difficult to fall asleep. Nidhi recommends taking steam or gargling with turmeric and saltwater. Or else, mix 1/4th teaspoon of Lavangadi churna, 1/4th teaspoon of Sitopaladi churna, 1 drop of ginger juice and honey and lick it 3 times a day for a week.

For weakness
Weakness is quite a common symptom of long COVID and it takes time to gain the strength back. But by taking the right diet and some Ayurvedic supplements you can support your system to recover faster. Have 2 tablets of Samshamani Vati daily or 1 tablet of Suvarna Malini Vasant or 10 days post-COVID for a speedy recovery.
