There is an endless library of great movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video that will be your best companion during the lockdown. Most great films are generally remembered by their protagonists and not the crew that has worked off-camera to bring that movie to life. However, there are some individuals who have broken free from this stereotype. The films created by some of these directors have gone on to become genres of their own. Even before they are released, there is an expectation in the audiences’ minds regarding their creations. And what’s more, most of their movies are almost always critically acclaimed and make it big in the awards circuit. Here are seven movies by seven great directors from Hollywood and Bollywood that you should check out.

1. QUENTIN TARANTINO | DJANGO UNCHAINED – NETFLIX

Featuring Jamie Foxx as the lead, Django Unchained is the story of how a former slave joins a bounty hunter once he is freed. He does so because he wants to rescue his wife from the clutches of a plantation owner. You need to watch this because it is among the most important movies on Netflix about racism and slavery.

2. ANURAG KASHYAP | GANGS OF WASSEYPUR – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

This Anurag Kashyap film with two-parts is a cult classic. In the first part of the film, a gangster goes against a coal-mining lord who had killed his father. When he fails to do so, his son takes on the same lord and takes over his empire. It’s among the most twisted gangster dramas to have ever been produced in Bollywood and among the first ones to be so outrightly profane.

3. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN | INCEPTION – NETFLIX

In this mind-boggling film directed by Christopher Nolan, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the protagonist who steals information from people’s dreams. He’s also wanted for his role in his wife’s murder. This film and Leonardo, both, are cinematic wonders and Inception is among the best movies on Netflix.

4. SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI | PADMAAVAT – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

Among the many masterpieces created by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this film stands out due to Ranveer Singh’s outstanding performance. The tales about the beauty of Mewari Queen Padmavati, wife of Raja Ratan Singh of Chittor, are widespread. But when an Afghan king, Alauddin Khilji, hears them, he wants to marry her and is ready to go to battle for it. This film also chronicles the ancient ritual of jauhar. The cinematography of this movie is beautiful and even eagle-eyed fans may not be able to spot any flaws here.
